Gift of Forgiveness, Problem of Pride

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

Maybe this verse just doesn’t appeal to you. Maybe you don’t like to think about doing wrong or how you need forgiveness. Avoiding the concept of forgiveness is a terrible problem and sin, yet most people do avoid it. We as christians however, should embrace forgiveness. God established forgiveness as as means of reconciliation with him, not as something that we should dread and dislike.

“For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour.” Romans 3:23   (paraphrased)

This verse make it pretty clear. We all need forgiveness, whether we like it or not. Without God’s forgiveness, we can’t have a relationship with Him and go to heaven. But forgiveness is a gift, and all we have to do to receive the benefits of it, is to accept it! So why don’t people like the concept of forgiveness?

I think it’s a pride problem. Naturally, we don’t want to think that we have done wrong and therefore need forgiveness, because it puts us in a position in which we are lower than someone else. Pride is part of our sin-nature, and it is the root of lots of problems. Proverbs tells us that “pride comes before a fall, and a haughty spirit before destruction.”

We need to recognize that pride is a problem, and once we have gotten rid of it, we should be able to recognize our sin and our need for forgiveness. Once we see and accept our need for forgiveness, we should openly and joyfully receive it as God’s gracious gift to us. Then we can see how truly wonderful this verse is to we who are christians. It means that we were sinners and were destined to hell and misery, but God in his unfathomable mercy, allowed Jesus to be a sacrifice for our sin so that we can be forgiven.

This is the lesson that you can take from this:

1. Acknowledge that pride is a problem and continue to fight against it.

Fight the pride causing trouble in all areas of your life. Don’t be embarrassed to help or befriend the needy because it might make you look bad. On the other hand, don’t do good just so that people will see how good you are. Think of others before yourself. Selfishness and pride are like twins. They almost always go together.

 2. Confess when we have done wrong and need forgiveness.

We have sinned and lived in rebellion against God. We have turned our backs on our Creator and King, the One who gives us life and existence. We have ruined our relationship with our Father, and every good deed we have done is counted as filthy rags.

3. Ask for forgiveness and thankfully accept God’s mercy.

Accept God’s forgiveness and live as a child of the one true King! Thank him daily for his mercy and grace, and continue to live for him.
